Artifacts of Immigration

Deutschheim Historic Site

Established in 1978 as a state historic site within the Missouri Department of State Parks, the mission of Deutschheim State Historic Site is to preserve, protect, and interpret the heritage, material culture and traditions of Missouri’s 19th century German immigrants and their German American descendants. Open year round for guided tours, Deutschheim welcomes over four thousand visitors each year.

Through guided tours of two historic Hermann house/businesses, circa 1840, visitors learn the story of 19th century German immigration, why they left Germany and why they chose Missouri. School groups, German language classes and heritage tourism travel groups enjoy customized tour experiences. Special events include the annual June Garden Tour and Weihnachtsfest, a traditional 19th century German Christmas celebration, held the first two weekends in December. While over half of visitors are Missourians, Deutschheim draws visitors from all over the nation and internationally, many from Germany. The historic site has an annual operating budget of $170,000, employing two full time staff and interpretive tour guides and maintenance workers seasonally. The site is open 10am to 4pm seven days a week, from April to October, and Thursday-Sunday from November to March. Guided tours cost $5.00/adult and $3.00/youth. Special events and the Deutschheim State Historic Site visitor center exhibits are offered free to the public.
