  German pipes. The men enjoyed a good smoke and they also enjoyed the uniqueness of their pipes. These are examples that show the stem, which is distinctly different and can be interchanged with various porcelain bowls held together by a silken cord so that you could determine which parts you wanted, what your design choices were. You likely had your everyday pipe. You also had your Sunday pipe. Oftentimes the images on the porcelain bowls depict the rothouse perhaps in the community from whence you came. It might have been the prince’s, uh, the castle, the schloss that the— from your local pr-, uh, province. It may also have been a portrait of a, perhaps, a nobility or of someone that you admired that was a literary figure. So it was an option for an artistic expression as well as the utility of a, of a good smoke. Now not always was the tobacco good—so I’ve been told by some of the old timers—that within the bowl you might actually place a little wine. That not only would take off the edge of the less than desirable tobacco that you had available, but perhaps even infused it with a little flavor of the wine that you preferred. So this is an example of German smoking pipes.
