Artifacts of Immigration

Berlin Work at Deutschheim Historic Site

Berlin work. Many immigrant women enjoyed their needlework and we have an example here of Berlin work, which is named obviously for the city of Berlin where the patterns originated. In this example, it’s mounted on a stand that’s replicating bamboo because they loved the import of exotic items. This would’ve been something from the mid-nineteenth century. This encase, it’s actually displayed on an elevated platform, which brings the work closer to the light because at this time period you only had access to sunlight, firelight, and candlelight and certainly the colors are rendered more true when they’re closer to the window. And not only that but you can take a look out the window and see who’s passing by. So it’s a good way for you to feel comfortable and also do your needlework in good light. This is Berlin work.
