Plate 3.38: Engraving of a Chimney Piece in the Bishop’s Palace at Exeter Plate 3.38 of Vetusta Monumenta depicts a late-fifteenth century chimneypiece erected by Bishop Peter Courtenay in the Bishop’s Palace, Exeter. It was originally placed in Bishop John de Grandisson’s parlor in the west wing of the palace, but was moved to the east wing during eighteenth-century renovations for Bishop Frederick Keppel and then to the drawing room in 1952. 14. Plate 3.39: Engraving of a Tessellated Pavement at Colchester Plate 3.39 of Vetusta Monumenta depicts a second-century CE Roman mosaic pavement in Colchester, Essex. Numerous borders characterize the pavement’s design, including an outer border of red tesserae, the delicate floral scroll border further within the pavement, and circular borders at the center made up of wave and triangle patterns.
