Plates 3.40-3.44 of Vetusta Monumenta depict Hedingham Castle, Essex. Plate 3.40 shows the keep set within the castle’s inner bailey along with indications of various demolished buildings. Plate 3.41 includes plan views at five levels through the keep and external views of the main entrance and of windows at various levels. Plate 3.42 (upper half) shows a highly detailed elevation of the south wall; the lower half includes a plan of the basement level (Fig. 2), the left-hand side of the plan (Fig. 3), and numerous architectural elements including door surrounds and column capitals (labeled I-Y). Plate 3.43 involves a highly detailed sectional drawing throughout the whole height of the building, the first such drawing to be published. Plate 3.44 is an external view of the keep, showing the south and west walls with views of the surrounding landscape on either side. Plate 3.38: Engraving of a Chimney Piece in the Bishop’s Palace at Exeter Plate 3.38 of Vetusta Monumenta depicts a late-fifteenth century chimneypiece erected by Bishop Peter Courtenay in the Bishop’s Palace, Exeter. It was originally placed in Bishop John de Grandisson’s parlor in the west wing of the palace, but was moved to the east wing during eighteenth-century renovations for Bishop Frederick Keppel and then to the drawing room in 1952. Numerous borders characterize the pavement’s design, including an outer border of red tesserae, the delicate floral scroll border further within the pavement, and circular borders at the center made up of wave and triangle patterns.
